Class Description

In "The Science of Food" class, students will embark on a culinary journey that delves into the fascinating scientific principles behind everyday cooking and baking. This hands-on course is designed to spark curiosity and creativity in young chefs, as they explore the magic that transforms simple ingredients into delicious meals and treats. Each lesson combines fun activities with educational content, allowing students to see, touch, and taste the science at work in their food.
Throughout the course, students will engage in various experiments and cooking projects that highlight key scientific concepts. They will learn how enzymes can create liquid centers in candies, explore the properties of viscosity and elasticity by making edible slime, and discover how different densities affect the layering of liquids in colorful drinks. By extracting natural food dyes and comparing the gelling properties of agar and gelatin, students will gain a deeper understanding of the chemistry behind their favorite foods. Additionally, they will experiment with molecular gastronomy techniques, such as spherification, and learn how to transform liquids into powders using maltodextrin.
By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in the science of food, equipped with the knowledge and skills to continue experimenting in their own kitchens. First and foremost - I am a Foodie! My love for food extends far beyond the kitchen and the lab. I see food as a transformative force—one that can alter moods, influence health, and shape interactions with the world. My deep appreciation for culinary arts is rooted in the belief that learning to cook is not just a hobby but a powerful way to nurture the body and soul. The joy of crafting a dish, the exploration of flavors, and the satisfaction of nourishing oneself and others make cooking a profoundly impactful aspect of daily life.

This passion for food and its potential led me to do my Mas...

Instructor's reviews

My daughter actually switched to the other section of this class... 3rd-5th Grade, so I don't want to give this teacher a bad review but she had started in this section (K-2), so that's the review I was sent.

Overall, I found this class to be very disappointing. It was listed as a class taught by a Disney Princess and the class ended up having 3 different teachers during the course. This was confusing for the students and didn't offer any cohesiveness. The teachers couldn't even remember the kids names. At the end of the semester, very few songs or dances were actually taught and the kids mostly played games during the hours of the class. The class isn't inexpensive, so for this, I wouldn't gone somewhere else to give my daughter a better experience and have her learn something.

Harry Potter Camp was so much fun! My girls loved making wands and creating potions...and thinking of mischievous ways to stir trouble at Hogwarts! The creative programming was wonderful for this outdoor day camp and kept my girls busy and having a great time. Their only request was that the day lasted longer! They came home and continued creating ideas to keep the magic going. Thank you!

I feel that this course is not tailored for K-1 grade. K-1 graders need more moving around, especially after a long day at school, then was made possible by the instructor.
